Ed Terran asked:

When it comes to architecture and decorating there is one style that cannot be beat for the beauty that is inherent in the quality of it, that would be the Victorian era works. This is one of the most popular styles of decorating for the sake of having the classic look.

Marked by the increase in success in the days of the Industrial Revolution, Victorian became one of the leading ways to furnish that was embraced by the middle class. Suddenly they could afford the beauty of the architecture and home furnishing that had been reserved only for the upper class in previous years.

The Victorian era covers basically the years from 1837 to 1901 and was named after Queen Victoria. The beginning of using the furnishings was a cluttered look. The middle class people who could now afford the luxury of these furnishing were so besought with them, that they crammed as much as they could into their homes in an effort to show off their new found status.

When people had drawing rooms rather than family rooms they would use every available inch of space for the Victorian furniture. The colors used were based upon the area the person lived. If they lived in the city, darker colors were used due to the air quality. This was also affected by the availability of what was available to mix their paint.

They used what was available to mix paint to the desired color. Since the first part of the Victorian era, the color of the dining rooms and libraries were a lighter color than the rest of the home. Sometimes a blue green was used as a wash on paneled walls. During the second half of this era, people grew a little bolder and started using deep colors. It was not unusual for bedrooms to be a vivid green.

Wallpaper began to be used and it would be stenciled as well as the looks that were popular in our world recently. By sponging and splattering, they achieved a look of texture rather than the plain walls of earlier times. Sometimes it was hard to tell where the wallpaper ended and the paint began. Simulating wood grain was another way the Victorian era decorators would embellish their walls.

The popularity of wallpaper took on a whole new meaning during the Victorian era. The wallpaper was richly decorated. Flowers were one popular way of enhancing their wall paper. The backgrounds were typically shades of red, blue or green, then painted with flowers of a light color.

It did not matter what room of the home you were in either. Flowers were everywhere. This was a point setting the Victorian era apart from any other style of decorating that we know today.

Some people may think this style is a little overwhelming because the use of the flowers and leaves for the walls did not stop there. They actually were carried over to furniture. Fabrics were designed that often would have the same pattern of the walls and used to cover the chairs in the room. But it did not stop there. Ceilings were also papered to equalize the look of the walls.

Home Improvement

Roger King asked:

Hanging drapery fabric to your living or dining room windows will add style, control light, and enhance or obscure a view. Drapery panels are usually more formal in appearance, and are mostly heaver than curtain fabric. Typically lined, pleated, and floor-length, drapery curtains are attach by hooks to a decorative rod, and some sort of cord device that hangs behind either the left or right of the drapery panel. Choose complementary treatments in rooms that open to one anther or that share the same style furniture.

If your window styles and sizes vary within a room, use the same fabric but in different fabrications, such as classic swags and draperies. The styles and colors you wear may reveal the color you’re most comfortable living in. Whatever your style preference, don’t let your window treatment’s form obstruct its function. In formal room, choose full, flowing window treatments that complement the fabrics of the furnishings. Use pattern or color to transform a window into a formal point.

For starters, window treatment doesn’t have to be fabric. Either way, don’t overfill the room with fabrics; “less is more” in the design scheme. Choosing the right drapery fabric can make all the difference in fashioning great treatments. There are many ways of hanging sheer drapes, conventionally with a casing or eyelets, or you can use a gathered heading tape with a track or pole. Tall windows in high-ceiling room are perfect candidates for classic drapery and valance treatments.

So before you choose a window covering, consider the way your window open and close. Whatever type of curtain or drapery you select, how you top it and tie it back can have a major impact on your design schemes. Combination treatments give you freedom to manipulate the apparent size and shape of your windows. For the most pleasing look, choose drapery fabric that matches the degree of custom in each room.

Real Estate

architectural styles
Lee Keadle asked:

Few cities in the country have a style of house all their own.  The Chicago bungalow and the Cape Cod are two styles that come to mind for having specific architecture associated with the area.  In Charleston, SC, you’ll find what’s called the Charleston single.  This is a single family house that is not very wide but is very long, and they’re usually two to three stories.  Residents started building these homes in the 1700s in downtown Charleston.  Land was being sold at a premium, and these homes were designed to fit on smaller lots.  The idea was to build up rather than out, so you’ll see some historic homes in downtown Charleston with as many as five stories!

There are so many of these homes are available to home buyers in downtown Charleston.  So, if you’re looking to buy an authentic Charleston styled home and you’re in a higher price range, this is the ideal area to start your home search.  You can find beautifully restored Charleston singles, many of which can be linked back to Charleston’s rich history.  For example, lots of these homes are listed on various state and national registers of historic homes, and some are featured in books about Charleston’s history.

If you’re looking for the Charleston look but want a newer home, you’ll find so many options throughout the Charleston area.  Because this style of home is in high demand from buyers, new neighborhoods built in the Charleston style have been popping up in areas from James Island to Summerville!

The most famous of these neighborhoods is I’on.  This is a nationally known neighborhood located in Mt. Pleasant, and this is as close as it gets to downtown Charleston style homes.  Many of these homes have the final Charleston touches, too, such as operable shutters, beautiful brickwork designs, and gas lighting at the entrance.  The main downfall of I’on is that it’s as expensive as the homes in downtown Charleston.  But, if you’re in this price range anyway (say, $700K plus), and you don’t want to live downtown but still want the feel of it, I’on may be the neighborhood for you!

There are plenty of more affordable options for Charleston styled homes, so don’t worry if your budget is in the $200-500K range.  On James Island, you’ll find the Charleston style neighborhoods Westfield Place, Eaglewood Retreat, Jamestowne Village, and Lakeside Village.  On Johns Island you’ll find Barberry Woods, the Villages in St. Johns Woods, and Rushland Plantation.  In Mt. Pleasant there is Rivertowne on the Wando, Grassy Creek, Chadbury Village, The Village subsection of Park West, and Hamlin Plantation.  West Ashley has Schieveling Plantation and McLaura Bluff, and Summerville has White Gables (which is the most affordable option on this list).

Whether you want an authentic Charleston style home in downtown Charleston or a newly built home in a convenient location, you’ll find a lot of options to choose from!

Home Improvement

Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

Windows can be used to protect our homes from the elements as well as to provide an attractive look to our homes. There are many different styles of windows that we can have installed. These windows can be protective, insulating and of course decorative. Of the many styles one of the more practical windows to be installed is that of awning windows.

These particular windows are ones that usually open from the top towards the outside. Some of these windows have the ability of opening inwards instead. For these windows to work well they are attached at the top and the bottom with hinges. These hinges allow you to open the windows to allow fresh air in and keep the other harsher elements out.

There are many window manufacturing companies that can provide you with these awning windows. Some of these companies will call the awning windows hopper windows instead. As the name does not matter you should see if the window functions the way an awning window is supposed to. This is opening at the top and either outwards or inwards.

These awning windows are generally made on the small side. For this reason you will mainly find them being used as basement windows, apartment windows, over the door windows and also used in conjunction with other windows. One of the main windows they can be used with is that of casement windows. When you combine these two windows styles together you will be the owner of a magnificent window decoration with access to a stunning view.

The awning windows are built to be energy saving and easy to operate. The various manufacturers of these windows have the windows made in several different colors. These colors will include shades like white, sandstone and bronze. To make these windows even better at security you will find a range of security features like quick-release sashes, security plates, key locks, heavy-duty sash locks, and also concealed locks.

While security features are necessary items to have on windows there are other needs that homeowners require. These include insulated glazing, bulb seals for high wind areas, insect screens, weather stripping, folding handles, hook hinges that allow the windows to be opened wider. There are ventilators which allow the air in the home to circulate better as a result of the awning windows. You will also find other glazing options with the use of awning windows.

Awning windows are a great choice of windows to have in places where you will find it difficult to have your usual windows. The structure of the awning windows are ones that you will find pleasing because they combine with any type of furniture décor and home architectural style.

Naveen Marasinghe asked:

The most ancient colonial fashioned structure still to survive in Hong Kong is the Flagstaff House. The building for along time was the residence of the Commander of the British Armed forced in Hong Kong, during Hong Kong’s colonial era.

Formerly Flagstaff House was called Headquarter House before 1932. The exact person to whom the design of this wonderful building should be attributed to remains a bit of a mystery. Most historians think that either, Murdoch Bruce, who was apparently Scotsman or Lieutenant Bernard Collinson designed this building. The building has an architectural style of Greek revival style. The construction of the building was completed in 1846. The first resident to live within this building was Major General George Charles D’Aguilar. He was the General Officer Commanding (1844 to 1846) and was also the Lieutenant Governor.

The building was later offered over to the civilian Hong Kong government by the military. It was heralded as a monument in 1989. Restoration efforts were made to bring it to the 19th century style, with reinforcements being made to the structure of the building.

The Flagstaff House has been changed to the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware in 1984, which is a division of the Hong Kong Museum of Art. This museum studies, collects and displays tea ware. The world’s oldest existing teapot resides here. A new arm was made to the museum, the K.S. Lo Gallery, in 1995. This was named in honour of local person who made a donation of his collection in 1970.This is now the museum’s main collection.

Numerous hotels are also available here; a noteworthy hotel in Hong Kong is the Cosmo Hotel in Hong Kong.

Art

architectural styles
Rajneesh Dubey asked:

In painting world there are so many styles that are very popular. But before giving an account of different popular styles we need to know what the term “style” means. In fact, there is not any certain definition of “style”. It may be understood in the aesthetic terms as what to paint or which physical technique implied in painting. Aesthetic movements like realism, romanticism and impressionism belong to this explanation of style. To further understand it, we may say that style is said to be the ways an artist paints and applies colors and texture. The perspective and the way in which an artist looks at the things visible and invisible characterize his or her style.

Scholarly discourse on style has given more technical term “movement” or “school” to which an artist can be associated with. Inclusion of an artist to certain school or movement may be done by the deliberate affiliation of the artist to such movement or by the art historians.

Some of the popular painting styles are discussed under following heads:

Constructivism: This movement had started in Russia in the wake of socialism. It was not purely an art but was a fusion of art and architecture. This movement was principal inspiration in raising many socialist establishments in Russia after the October revolution. Constructivism was on high in the period between 1919 to 1934. The chief proponents of this style of art were Alexander Rodcheckno, Liubov Popava, Vladimir Tatlin and Olga rozanova.

Fauvism: This is painting style in which proponents believed in the use of color as a massive emotional force. This style was marked by expression of feelings in colors with severe roughness and clumsiness. The use of simplified lines to expressively reveal the subject and theme of the painting was also used to be the attempt of the artists. They preferred spontaneity and freshness over the finish in any work of art. Pioneer of this art style was Gustave Moreau.

Classicism: This term refers to the paintings style employed by the ancient Roman and Greek painters. Classicism is characterized by the simplicity and adherence to the basic rules and principles of painting. This art style is refined and elegant, disciplined by order and symmetry. Classicism is unique style which does not encourage self expression and individuality. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Mantegna were the painters who tried to imitate this ancient style of art.

Besides, there are so many other styles and schools which are significant and have expressed different thoughts and subjects of the self and society in a unique way. Noteworthy of them are- abstract art, aboriginal art, aestheticism, art brut, art nouveau, baroque, Byzantine art, cubism, dada, dragging, encaustic, paintings, expressionism, gothic paintings, impressionism, mannerism, marbling, minimalism, modernism, neoclassicism, orientalism, primitivism, ragging & stippling, realism, spattering, surrealism, symbolism, theorem paintings and wood graining.

Furniture

architectural styles
Peter Gitundu asked:

The term mission style bookcase came about when mission revival style architecture was initiated, the mission being Spanish located throughout Southwestern United States and Mexico. This style was mostly known for making extraordinary out of the ordinary.

This means they used simple basic material to create amazing pieces of furniture which was and is referred to as mission style bookcase. This kind of furniture is rectangular and is mostly made of oak. It come with great durability and incredible simplicity. If you have the relevant knowledge and materials, the furniture can be produced in a day.

The amazing designs or arts and crafts have a style that has slatted ends and pyramid topped posts and slats. Mission style bookcases will not only store your books and valuable for you but, you can get to display photographs, poetry, antiques, figurines and many others. You will get cases with different sizes and shapes. This is because the shelves and compartments also differ.

Adding glass doors to mission style bookcases will help your books and valuables stay without elements of dust and aging. However, you can choose for them to stay without a door or unenclosed. This bookcases are timeless and they hardly go out of style. This is their major characteristic.

Mission style bookcases are made of hardwood and are then finished by hand to produce smooth distinctive products. They are very durable and this means that you can look forward for them to serve you for many years. The best thing is that they will go with any decor of the house.

The style inspires us from the past and come with great distinctive features. Upper and lower shelves feature through tenon and tenon construction. You need to choose a size that is appropriate for your book collection. You are sure that they will accommodate your needs. This kind does not require a lot of space unlike the modern kind of furniture we see today.

Small shelves will accommodate a large number of books making it very adaptable and versatile. This is the reason why it goes forward to future generations to serve them and make life comfortable. It has also become a very popular style where young stars have also been seen to love it. The best thing is that it does not require maintenance which can prove to be a very helpful.

You can equip them with a glass door any time and this is not a must. Another advantage is that they can be used at home, office, library and many other places. Apart from storing books, you can display china dinnerware, porcelain and the list goes on. This style of furniture is clearly in a class of its own and it will complement a lot in your space.

It will accommodate many aspects of the home including lampshades, cabinets, tables, chairs, chandeliers, vases and a host of very many other things. Made exclusively from wood, it will fit in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and other places. You will not regret having this amazing piece.
